Feb. 21st: Final Day with the Comedy Legend

I cannot begin to describe how unbelievable these last two days have been.  There's a reason why Kevin McDonald is as famous as he is.  Because he's an absolute comedy genius.  It was great to spend two full days with him learning how to transform an improv scene into a great sketch.

I especially liked getting to talk to him more about his experience on Kids In The Hall and their process of collaboration.  If there is anything I learned from these workshops it is that the success of sketch comedy has a lot to do with the communication between the writers.  The beauty of improv is that the writers are too busy directing and performing to think about how they are going to funny.  The funny just sort of happens.  But when you put a bunch of comedians in a room who all have their ideas of how to make something funny, it can be hard to decide collectively which funny route you want to take.

The lesson I took away is to respect my fellow comedians and do my best to understand their comedic strengths in relation to my own so that together we can create the funniest scenes possible.

Thank you so much Kevin McDonald for an extremely inspirational two days.  And thank you for the extremely hilarious performance with Table 23 tonight.  There really is only one word to wrap up yesterday and today: AWESOME!
